She’s talking more than anyone and once you hear a loud laugh, you know that she’s here. She is Koming and she’s the manager of the Joshua District restaurant.
She started to work here almost 4 years ago and during all this time she made this place work perfectly.
“Once they called me and I had no idea where they took my number”, she tells. “And the funniest part that I canceled the first meeting. I had a big reason for that, it was really windy on that day and the big tree fell down on my kitchen”.
The next day when she came in, it was Petrus who she met and everybody was very surprised. “He was one of the customers in my warung in Canggu and I had no idea that he is one of the partners here. But it was not even him who gave my number to Lukas, it was Milo — our common friend who has Rivera house in Canggu”.
“It was love at first sight with Joshua District! Because it’s very close to my character and to what I love. It was about rock’n’roll and an open meeting point for the whole creativity around. And I love how people are coming in and hanging out and chill, that’s why I try to give the best energy for them”.
The first team in Joshua District was different when she started and there was no system in here, only manual. “I changed the system and Lukas trusted me. We changed the first team as well because they had troubles with discipline, and from that moment, it was me, Putri and Ambros who were working for almost two months without any days-off. It was a fun period!”
“It was me who invited Mr. Nyoman, our chef. With him, it was almost the same as with me. First, he rejected my offer because he wanted to rest after his contract work in Dubai. But I called him for the second time and he agreed!”
“At that time we had Zdenek, a friend of Lukas and Martina, and a very good chef from the Check Republic. But he only made a menu for us and we were looking for someone who will work with us and who will learn our menu and will follow it. So Zdenek teach Nyoman about our food and now he’s with us”
“The best moment that I remember was the first JD birthday when we had a Dj and an open bar. We were very surprised cos we thought that it’s gonna be only 100 people or so, but it was some incredible number of people who were in here — about 300 and only 10 people were working.
We were working till the morning and on the next day, we opened the restaurant as usual at 7 a.m.”
“The tough moment was when Lukas started to give us a target per month. It was not that easy from the very beginning to get used to the sales goals, because from the beginning it was more like a restaurant for friends and people who stayed in JD villas. But we kept it positive and now it’s just a daily routine”
“What else do I love about this place is that when Lukas is hiring you, he doesn’t really look at the skills or the position where you came from. If you want to learn, if you want to grow up here, he will give you this chance! They respect us and treat people who work here more like family and friends”.
“I’m never too bossy to the team as well. Because it just doesn’t work like this here. When you manage them in a good way and give them a chance to grow, all will be good”
“But I can say that sometimes they are the same as kids! And I have two kids at home, so I know that for sure. Sometimes I can be angry cos I keep repeating about what they should do so many times, and this may piss me off, cos they act like 4 years old kids, but they are 20 and 23 years old already.
And when I need to repeat myself it makes me emotional about myself, cos I keep thinking if it’s me who cannot manage the people properly. If that happens, I run from here to grab a rujak or something. But we have an amazing team actually!”
“Manage two kids and work? Easily! Some mums are very stuck with their kids and they become very stressful. I give my kids enough space and take time for myself from that. It doesn’t mean that I don’t care about them, I think about them all the time. But everyone needs their own time — when I’m happy it’s good for my kids. If not, they will feel it and they will be not that happy as well”
“I had a deal with Lukas from the very beginning that I will have my kids with me here if I’ll need it. I also respect the rules and kindness in here, so my younger daughter is not here too often as she’s still too young, only 4 years old. And my older is already 10 years old and she can manage herself and not really disturbed me while I’m working”
“Plus they can learn from different people, and in that young age, it’s good for their mentality”
“I would love to make a bar in here and maybe even a pool upstairs. Not crazy and bounty, but something cool and creative”
“It depends on the person, if they are open to making friends with us and becoming a part of the family, we are very happy to do it! We call it a family because we are here together every day and we hug each other and kiss each other, and we love to share our stories very much! We are creating the community of JD”
“My favorite food here is goulash but with extra chili, it’s tastier for me! With a little bit of Bali in Czech’s soup”
